Chicago the Musical at ASU Gammage

Wonderful cast and interesting staging. However, with the "jazz band" taking up so much space they did crowd out the dancers and thus was a bit of a distraction. Placing them farther in the background by a mere 10 feet would have improved the performance immensely.
ASU Gammage has always had fine acoustics but the sound system seemed a bit "off" on the Saturday night performance. And the large spotlight was a huge distraction for those unfortunate enough to sit in the balcony. It made it difficult to see the stage. The venue is showing a lot of wear and tear...worn faded carpet and the seats are losing their "padded" feel.
Unfortunately, for this event, the return on investment was not there. Ticket prices too high for balcony and venue.

All That Jazz

For those unfamiliar with this Kander & Ebb collaborate with Fosse show, it's based on real trials in 1920's Chicago involving women murdering their husbands and boyfriends and getting acquitted. How it's presented here is Vaudeville. We meet Velma Kelly, who walked in on her husband and her sister in position #17, The Spread Eagle. We meet Roxie Hart, who shot her lover when he tried to walk out on her. Roxie's husband, Amos gets saddled with much of her baggage, and performs the Tramp number in the second act. We meet Matron Mama Morton, who trades privileges with the girls in exchange for money. And then there's Billy Flynn, here played by OSU football legend Eddie George.

Oh, there aren't that many nice characters in this, but the music is jazzy, and the orchestra is on stage and part of the show. And we also see the dark side of the justice system here, as both the murderers get acquitted, but the one truly innocent girl with a public defender gets hanged.

And much like Billy sings during Roxie's trial, who cares about the truth when there's so much Razzle Dazzle on stage? It is Fosse, so tight clothing, bowlers, and wonderful dance provide the spectacle while the darker tones slip in subconsciously.

Loved the show, loved the music. Only real issue I had with any of it was that the current Velma evidently joined the tour recently, and while her performance was good, it was clear she hasn't quite merged with the show fully yet. That will come with time.
